Traditional methods for measuring renewable material content in commercial fuels rely on spotting differences in chemical structure (Infrared Spectroscopy) or physical properties (boiling point distribution) between crude oil-based and biomass-based fuels. But conventional methods fall short for co-processed fuels, which are chemically similar to those made from crude oil — so newer techniques are essential. Radiocarbon Dating: A Cutting-Edge Analytical Technique
Radiocarbon dating is a well-regarded analytical technique that uses the natural decay of carbon isotopes to date a material. Used mainly by academic institutions and select commercial testing firms, the method calculates biobased content from the percent modern carbon (pMC) value, comparing carbon concentration in the sample against a known reference material.
Baltic Insurance and Survey was the first inspection company in Lebanon to offer radiocarbon dating by ASTM D6866, and continues to lead in this space. With three state-of-the-art laboratories in Lebanon through our partners, we deliver unmatched services for determining the biogenic content of renewable materials.
